By Car

From the south

Exit the M6 at junction 36 and follow signs for the South Lakes and Windermere. At the roundabout take the first left following signs for Crook and Bowness-on-Windermere on the B5284. After 6 miles arrive at a T-juntion, turn left on to the A5074 (Lyth Valley Road). Turn right where the road forks onto the B5360. Follow the drive to Blackwell’s car park.

From the north

Exit the M6 at junction 40 and follow signs for Keswick (A66) and Windermere (A591) via Grasmere and Ambleside. Once in Windermere follow signs for Bowness-on-Windermere. From Bowness-on-Windermere follow the road to Blackwell which is situated just off the A5074 (Lyth Valley Road) and turn right where the road forks onto the B5360. Follow the drive to Blackwell’s car park.

We have free parking on-site and two clearly marked Blue Badge parking spaces.

By Train

Oxenholme is the nearest main-line railway station, a connecting train will bring you into Windermere (three miles from Blackwell). Buses run to Bowness-on-Windermere, 1½ miles north of Blackwell. Alternatively, taxis are available from Windermere Station to Blackwell.

By Bike

Blackwell is accessible by bike and has dedicated bike racks.

Is there a car park?

Yes, Blackwell has its own car park and parking is free.

Are you open on bank holidays?

Of course. We’re open Monday to Sunday including bank holidays.

Can my dog come inside?

Sorry, only assistance dogs are allowed inside, including the Tea Room and house. They are welcome on leads to join you in the gardens and terraces outside.

Can I eat my own picnic in the garden?

No. We request that only food bought on site is consumed anywhere on site.

Can I visit the Tea Room or Shop without paying house admission?

Yes, you’re more than welcome to do this. Come in through the Tea Room entrance door or via the main entrance.

Are you closed over Christmas?

Our opening times do change during the winter period. We are:

Open 27 December – 6 January 2019
Closed 7 – 17 January 2019 for maintenance
