Landscape of Light: Recent Photographs by John Swannell
27 April - 7 July 2002
John Swannell, who has travelled to some of the world's most exotic locations, still regards the Lake District as one of the most beautiful places to photograph. Landscape has always been an important element of his art, even though he is perhaps best known for his celebrity portraits of figures such as Princess Diana, Sir John Gielgud, Dame Judi Dench, Billy Connolly and Mick Jagger, which were exhibited at Abbot Hall in 1998.
John Swannell has until now always printed his landscapes in black and white. However, advances in digital printing techniques have allowed him to develop a printing process that obtains the effects he seeks in colour. A stunning new series of landscapes, mainly of Lake District subjects, are on show for the first time in the setting of the landscapes themselves.
