Fireplaces and Inglenooks

Arts & Crafts architect MH Baillie Scott saw “the fire...as a substitute for the sun” and its “cheerfulness...akin to the delight sunlight brings”. Inglenook fireplaces in the house appear in several of the rooms and in the historic Main Hall, the fire almost seems to sit in a snug little room of its own. Its seating, extending into a bay window, offers a cosy perch from where to enjoy the views across Lake Windermere and the Cumbrian fells.
