Nicola Jarvis Studio Presents: The Art of Embroidery

26 May - 8 September 2016

Nicola is an artist and embroidery designer using intricate drawing techniques and traditional hand embroidery to make her work.

The Art of Embroidery originated in Nicola’s exhibition at the William Morris Gallery (2013). She designed this exhibition after winning the Gallery’s Inspired by Morris competition in 2010. As a result of the exhibition’s success, Nicola received Arts Council funding to display the work in William Morris houses and institutions around the UK. This display at Blackwell is located in the Tea Room.

Inspired by the iconic drawings, textile designs and practice of William Morris and his daughter May Morris, the art works in this exhibition are reproductions of embroideries made by Nicola and her talented friends and colleagues from the world wide embroidery community, including Australia, United States of America and Europe.

The textile images feature Nicola’s distinctive birds and creatures, constructed from her deep knowledge and love of hand embroidery and English decorative art. Created in a range of traditional embroidery techniques and stitches, including crewelwork, silk work and gold work, the motifs have been worked in contemporary materials and colour schemes to produce a collection of modern canvases.
