FUNDING

A fundraising campaign was launched in July 1998 which enabled Blackwell to be purchased by the Lakeland Arts Trust (Charity No. 526980) on 26 February 1999 for £750,000.

On 15 July 1999 an award of £2,252,000 was made by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the cost of the project. The Trust has spent an additional £500,000 on design, project work and fees.

There are now two areas where the Trust needs to build up funds:

  • A Purchase Fund is being built up for acquisitions. We have already purchased a Baillie Scott oak Manxman piano and two pieces from the Keswick School of Industrial Art, a copper coffee pot and a silver plated cream jug.
  • The Endowment Fund provides operating income for the Trust to run both Abbot Hall and Blackwell. The Trust aims to build this up considerably in the coming years as its most important source of revenue funding.

How you can help
By joining the Friends of the Lakeland Arts Trust as a Patron or Friend you will not only benefit from unlimited access to Blackwell and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, but your contribution will support our ongoing acquisitions policy as well as the maintenance and development of Blackwell and Abbot Hall.

DESIGN WORK

For the lottery application a great deal of design work was done, both on the restoration, and the alterations that were necessary. As a Grade I listed building it was necessary to obtain both planning permission and listed building consent. These were both granted in the Spring of 1999.

DESIGN TEAM
  • Project architects: Allies and Morrison
  • Quantity surveyor: Boyden & Co.
  • Project Manager: Buro4
  • Building Contractors: William Anelay Ltd
  • Services engineer: Max Fordham & Partners
  • Structural engineer: Harris and Sutherland
  • Conservator: Allyson McDermott
  • Landscape Designer: Kim Wilkie Associates

As part of the lottery application, the services of a gardens historian were employed, as well as those of a specialist paint consultant, and a specialist in fire safety and disabled access.

We also worked closely with English Heritage, the Planning Authority, the Fire Officer and the Building Inspector.

The Heritage Lottery Fund had a team of expert advisors assess our application. These included a business consultant, the district surveyor, an architectural historian, English Heritage and a museums advisor.

BUILDING WORK
HRH The Prince of Wales with Magdalene Odundo at Blackwell

The enormous task of restoring Blackwell to its original splendour took place between Spring 2000 and early Summer 2001.

The building work was facilitated by the main contractor (William Anelay Ltd) who subcontracted several of the more specialist tasks to firms and individuals with the relevant expertise.

The house opened to the public on time and within budget on 4th July 2001. It was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales on 25 September 2001.
