On
the same site as Abbot Hall Art Gallery, the Museum of Lakeland
Life shows how our Cumbrian ancestors worked, lived and entertained
themselves in the changing social climate of the past 200 years.
Our ancestors are long gone, but their belongings live on to tell
their story - from the age of 18th century yeoman farmers, through
Georgian and Victorian times and into living memory.

LAKELAND
LIFE
Exhibits include a street scene with pharmacy,
camera shop, toy shop and tailorŐs shop. There are reconstructed workshops
displaying curious machinery and a furnished kitchen, bedroom and
parlour from a typical 18th century Lakeland farmhouse. Elegant costumes
and examples of patchwork, embroidery and objects from the Arts and
Crafts movement are also on display. |

THE
WOOL TRADE
With
the sheep population outweighing the human equivalent, it is perhaps
not surprising that spinning and weaving became a main source of
income and the abundant forests provided resources for the local
Bobbin Mills. A working mill can be seen at Stott Park, Newby Bridge.

CRAFT DEMONSTRATIONS & COURSES
On select Wednesdays during Easter and the
Summer, local experts demonstrate the crafts of lace making, patchwork,
spinning, woodworking, weaving, basket making and other traditional
skills. Please telephone for dates and times. |

SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS FOREVER!
Arthur RansomeŐs reconstructed study contains
his writings and drawings, his desk and typewriter and many of his
personal belongings. Younger children enjoy the popular Captain Flint's
Locker. |
