Blackwell Illustrations by Sophie Martin
On display now in the Tea Room
In May 2016, local artist Sophie Martin, spent an inspiring few days drawing at Blackwell. As artist in residence, she captured the rooms, atmosphere and design details to create a new orientation map and activity trail. The original drawings, finished with water colour washes, are displayed here.
Sophie spent her childhood in the Lake District and studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. Working in pen, watercolour and acrylics, Sophie captures the immediacy and impressions of places, animals and people. Where possible, she completes each drawing in one sitting, keenly observing the apparently ordinary and familiar in everyday settings.
She loves drawing animals and is happiest attempting to capture sheep or chickens before they scamper away. Look out for ‘Baillie’ Blackwell’s mascot, created by Sophie based on a photograph of the Holt’s pet terrier.
