| Fantasies
in Clay: Martin Brothers art pottery (1873 - 1923)
17 June - 2 November 2008
From
the outset of their unorthodox enterprise the Martin Brothers inspired
a loyal following of collectors, entranced by the originality of
their stoneware ceramics. It is an enduring appeal, and Martinware
is as passionately collected today as it was a hundred years ago.
This
year’s summer exhibition provides a rare opportunity for visitors
to see how Martinware’s style evolved and progressed, keeping
step with the prevailing style trends of the day from the Gothic
Revival, through the Aesthetic movement’s japonisme and the
Renaissance Revival of the 1880s to the flowering of individualistic
expression in Wallace Martin’s iconographic Wally bird figures
and the late ‘abstract’ pots of Edwin Martin.
